The saddle stitch

One thread, two needles, and why a machine cannot do it.

The saddle stitch

A sewing machine locks two threads together in the middle of the leather. When one breaks, the seam unzips.

A saddle stitch uses one thread and two needles, crossing in every hole. When one side wears through, the other holds. It is slower by a factor of ten. It is also the reason a bag from us can be re-stitched fifty years from now.

Every seam on every Ormevale piece is saddle-stitched by hand with waxed linen thread.
